50-years of love in under 2 hours: Review of "Long Story Short"

Just as the title implies, this witty, poignant two-person musical manages to cover a 50-year love affair in less than 2 hours and on one set. You will see a couple go through not only the trials and hardships, but also the joys and laughter of a relationship.

The story follows a young, nerdy, Jewish man from the East Coast named Charles, and an older, sophisticated, Asian-American from Southern California named Hope. Their story of falling in love, getting married, having children, growing apart, and then learning to love again unravels before your eyes. The live band successfully carries you through each scene with their carefully crafted music to the set the mood.

Instantly I felt a connection to the characters. I loved the way time could stop on a seemingly random conversation and then fly by several years to strategically display the little moments and life changing decisions that make a couple what they are. Hope and Charles not only go through the typical stages of any relationship, but also endure tragedies that many couples would struggle to get through.

The musical starts with an awkward first date and then quickly progresses to a serious relationship. The typical views and feelings of men and women are shown in a lighthearted manner and were very easy to relate to. The combination of the acting, music, and screenplay let me leave the musical feeling more than satisfied. I definitely recommend this play. The intimate setting of the small theater in Lyceum Theater provides a proper setting to view the couple’s romance and tribulations. This clever musical left me appreciating the relationships I have in my life and wanting to see more of Charles and Hope’s life unfold.

This is a perfect musical for anyone who has been in a relationship and understands the small memories and the major milestones that give your relationship character. “Long Story Short” is truly a wonderful musical and definite must see.

Halloween: San Diego Style

For my first post in October, I thought it should be in honor of Halloween. San Diego offers many fun events and spooky attractions to make any Halloween lover happy. And luckily, this year it falls on the weekend, (October 31 is a Saturday). One of the beautfiul things about Halloween in San Diego is the fact that the fall weather has not truly set upon our miraculous city by Halloween. The weather is quite mild and perfect for whatever ghoulish acitivity you dare to take part in outside.

Haunted Trails in Balboa Park
Haunted Hotel I dared to experience this last year and let me tell you I was terrified!! I think out of the whole walk through my eyes were open a total of 2 minutes! You are led through a hotel with each room a different scary theme. Although the actors inside can not touch you, they do a pretty good job scaring the &#$^ out of you. Defintiely a Halloween must if you are looking for a bit of a scare!

San Diego Bay Fair: Celebrate the End of Summer

This weekend, September 18-20, Mission Bay will be hosting the largest annual family festival and sports competition San Diego Bay Fair--San Diego boat racing and family beach festival celebrating the end of summer. The Bay Fair has been celebrating for over 40 years now and invites to over 23 individual racing classes and over 150 high competition teams. Due to the amazing weather and great race course conditions, visitors are able to see boats racing at speeds over 225 mph. The festival does not just have boat racing, there is a family festival, live entertainment, vendors, great food and beer gardens, fireworks, kid’s fun zone and other family activities. The San Day Bay Fair expects to see over 150,000 visitors over the 3 days.

Spend a Night with Frank Bruni

Tonight at 7pm, New York Times food critic, Frank Bruni is joining us for a book talk, signing, and reception. Frank Bruni is a famous journalist and restaurant critic for the New York Times and has an extensive background. His recent release of Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater discusses his path of his journalistic career and his long time battle with being an overeater. His book is said to be humorous and interesting because he reveals the dark side of being a food lover.

Much like Wikipedia, the San Diego Wiki allows people to have a local resource to everything you need to know about San Diego as well as provide interactive tools that allow the users to keep the website updated. There is a plethora of information on anything you would like to find out about San Diego. Get Your Drink On at the San Diego Festival of Beer

Coming this weekend--Friday, September 18-- is the San Diego Festival of Beer, brought to you by the San Diego Professionals Against Cancer. Expecting over 6000 visitors this year, the San Diego Beer Festival will take place at Columbia and B from 6pm to 11pm. For only $30 a ticket, you will get ten (4oz.) beer tastings and live music, with the option of buying food and wine. There will be 120 microbrews from 60 breweries. Not only do you get a great show, but all proceeds go to benefit the Taylor Guitars in Schools Foundation, which provides children with a guitar and teaches them the skills to play it while they are in elementary school.
4pm-8pm Wine, Women & Shoes: This charitable event designed to benefit women's diagnostic imaging equipment and technology at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas, focuses on "fashion, fun, and friendship." Wine, food, raffles, shoes, and chefs will all be present at this fabulous event.

Restaurant Week Starts

ArtWalk on the Bay

One of the finest art festivals in San Diego, the ArtWalk on the Bay. It takes place on the Embarcadero Marina Park North on September 12 & 13 and features a variety of art including paintings, sculptures, glass work, jewelry, and more. The aim is to let people interact with artists and be able to see and purchase original pieces of art. The festival includes more than 100 artists, live music on two stages, kids activities, and wine tasting with the beautiful view of the San Diego Bay.

The Festival is proud to present that this year they are offering a Bayside Lounge featuring signature drinks for those who are 21 and up. Personally, I think the coolest thing about the Bayside Lounge is that part of their proceeds are going to ArtReach, which is an art program aimed at San Diego County K-6 students. ArtReach is also helping put on the KidsWalk, which features numerous interactive art activities.

This art festival is a must-see for locals and visitors.

Different Personalities of the San Diego Beaches

When wondering what beaches you should head to in San Diego, keep in mind each beach has a different personality and different things to offer. Below is a little guide to which of one of San Diego's best beaches will best suit your needs.

Ocean Beach: Low key, eclectic, hippie, dog beach, "little town feel." OB is popular for its unique stores and laid back personality. Home to the famous Hodad's (see my earlier post). This beach is definitely more of a locals spot because it is a little but further travel for tourists. Many of the local surfers and residents at the nearby hostel makes it feel like everyone here knows each other. However, it is definitely not as clean as some of the other beaches in SD.
Pacific Beach: The younger crowd's favorite hangout. PB has the most popular bar scene than any of the other San Diego beaches. It is a very popular party spot for many of the college students and young professionals. PB is also known to have great, and usually cheap, shopping. The beach is popular with the surfers. Parking is usually tough since PB is such a happening spot.
Mission Bay: Perfect for a picnic or family gathering with beautiful sights. There are miles of sand and grass available to play and enjoy the Bay. This should not be the spot you choose to swim and surf. The water is definitely more stagnant than ocean water since it is the bay. You will find children splashing in the Bay, but if swimming is what you want to do, don't pick the Bay.
Mission Beach: Definitely a tourist hot spot. There is a boardwalk to stroll along, miles of beach, tourist along with unique shops, and of course home to Belmont Park. Belmont Park is an amusement park with typical attractions and most famously their wooden roller coaster, the Giant Dipper. Mission Beach offers many things to do and a beautiful beach to enjoy. Some say this beach is the closet thing to something you would see on the East Coast.
La Jolla: Probably one of the most gorgeous places in San Diego. This is a very upscale and affluent city but also home to the most beautiful beaches. Whether you go to the Cove, the Cliffs (see earlier post), or the Shores, the sights will be amazing. La Jolla Shores is known to be a romantic spot and the Cove has tidepools and caves to explore. Windansea is close by and known as one of the best surfing beaches in San Diego. And if you are in the mood for a nude beach, try out Black's.
Coronado: Perfect for a weekend getaway. Coronado is a fantastic island full of restaurants, shops, and upscale hotels--like the Hotel Del. The beaches are perfect for everyone with their calm waves and clean sand. Coronado is known as one of America's finest beaches. This is definitely a beach to make a day out of.

Who's In For San Diego Restaurant Week 2009?

All of San Diego is gearing up for San Diego Restaurant Week. After participating in, (and being quite pleased with), the Taste of Gaslamp, I am sure Restaurant Week will be amazing. For those of you who do not know, San Diego Restaurant Week features 180 local restaurants offering 3-course meals for only $20, $30, or $40 per person (price depends on the restaurant). Unlike the Taste of Gaslamp, this is not just a food sampling event, but rather a sit down meal at the restaurant of your choice. San Diego Restaurant Week is going on it's 5th year in hopes of continuing to display San Diego as a "premier dining destination." There is no need for tickets for the Week however, reservations are highly recommended.

So you must be thinking to yourself, is $40 really worth it? If you know some of the restaurants participating, you would think otherwise. Getting a 3-course meal at the best restaurants for that price is beyond reasonable. So now is your time to try that restaurant you have been curious about.

Other than my experience with Taste of Gaslamp or dinners out, I have not explored all these restaurants as much as I would have liked. But that is what Restaurant Week is for, right? Based on past experiences and what I have been hearing, these are the places to try:

One of my favorites in downtown, Dakota Grill, have yet to be disappointed. Love their Roasted Garlic Flat Bread for an appetizer. Their fish and steaks are excellent. I am more of a fish lover but when I tried their steak I was very happy with it. Creme Brulee is a great choice for dessert.
NINE-TEN. Now I have only eaten here for breakfast but they had phenomenal eggs benedict, (which I might add, I am extremely picky about). I have heard they have great dinner menus as well so this would be a great place to try out
Trattoria Acqua was a recommendation when I was staying at the Grand Colonial Hotel in La Jolla and I could not have been more pleased with their suggestion. I had an amazing dish of ravioli here and am looking forward to what they crank out during Restaurant Week.
George's at the Cove definitely a well known restaurant in San Diego and another place I dont think you could go wrong.
The Prado I have only gotten the chance to eat here for dinner once (several times for business mixer breakfasts), but it was fabulous. Their menu for Restaurant Week looks great and diverse. Another great thing about the Prado is its location in gorgeous Balboa Park.
Ruth's Chris Steakhouse always a delicious choice. Has been a favorite of mine for a while now. $40 bucks is a steal to have 3 courses here.

My list is short, I know, but all these places would be a fabulous choice for a 3-course meal. If you are in San Diego September 13-18, now you know where you need to be--San Diego Restaurant Week.

San Diego's Alcohol Ban on Beaches: Was It Worth It?

With Labor Day Weekend in progress, the recently passed law of the alcohol ban is once again breaking news headlines. Locals and visitors alike are trying to find a way around the law permitting them to drink on the beaches.

The most recent attempt includes floating. That's right--floating. Many locals have tried floating in inner tubes a few feet from shore to pop open their ice cold beer. But is this legal? Sure is. San Diegans have found the loophole to the ban-- the right to have open containers of alcohol as long as your feet are not touching the sand. Police estimated large numbers exercising their "rights." The police are trying to crack down hard on the new policies but find it frustrating that many people are trying to go around the new ban, thus making it even harder to regulate.

An event called Floatopia brought quite a crowd. Floatopia was an organized effort in Mission Bay to party and drink off the sand. However, some people were not completely out of reach from the police--several arrests were made for being drunk in public and lifeguards did make some water rescues.

When San Diego residents passed this law in November, their hopes were to create a safer and more appealing environment for everyone. But now, the dangerous risks of drinking out in the water along with the issue of littering has become a bigger problem. Makes the San Diego voter think if their vote for the alcohol ban was the safest decision for San Diego...

What to Do on Labor Day in San Diego

What better way to spend Labor Day than in a beautiful city like San Diego? There are a bunch of things to do and places to enjoy. I have complied a list of things to do, events to attend, and some of my all time favorites of San Diego. Also look below for some helpful links.

The beach-- guaranteed to be crowded and police will be enforcing the new law passed for no alcohol on beaches, but the beach is always a great place to spend Labor Day, especially in a place as wonderful as San Diego.
BBQ, bonfire, or picnic in any beautiful San Diego Parks or beaches
SeaWorld or the Zoo have special late night activities during this weekend
For 21 and up, many of the bars/clubs in Gaslamp and Downtown are having parties. See individual places for details.

Shells & Swells: La Jolla Adventure Date

One of my favorite days spent in San Diego was when I went snorkeling and kayaking in La Jolla. I used a company called San Diego Bike and Kayak Tours and they did a fabulous job. My trip was about 3 hours long and around 50 bucks a person. It is definitely worth the price. Included in the price, you get an intro to kayak and snorkeling, a tour guide, and all the gear, (life jacket, snorkel, fins, mask, wetsuit if needed, paddle and kayak). And if you are still up to it , you can keep the snorkel gear for a half day after the guided tour part and explore on your own.

On your voyage, you kayak out to the 7 Caves in La Jolla. Once there, you link your kayaks together and have time to snorkel. You get to see beautiful local fish and see seals up close lounging on their rocks. If you go when the timing is right, you can even see some leopard sharks! You do not have to be experienced in snorkeling or kayaking to enjoy this. It was actually my very first time doing either and I felt very competent with the help of the guide and the introduction they give on land before you hit the water. The staff is friendly and really give you an enjoyable experience. I suggest bringing a water resistant or underwater camera to capture some of your memories made on your adventure.

For those of you who don't just want the typical formula for date, (dinner and a movie type deal), than this is the date for you. You are able to experience the beauty of La Jolla on the water, as well as under the water. An active couple or a new couple looking for an activity to break the ice would be perfect for this. This date provides an all day activity and plenty of fun and adventure!

I had a wonderful meeting the other day with Jamie Sutton, the President of What's Here! ( http://www.whatshere.info/ ). We were talking about all the people that live in San Diego, but fail to make the most of it. How can you sit on your couch when a gorgeous and exciting city is right outside your door?!? That is really why I wanted to create this blog. For San Diego natives or visitors, there are so many resources to see all that San Diego has to offer. Street Scene from My Eyes Part 2

As promised, here are some pictures and videos from Street Scene. I also wanted to give a brief review of some of the bands.

Devendra Banhart: I only caught a bit of one of his songs before the show, and was not going to make it a point to see him perform. Good thing I ended up watching most of his show though, because it was one of my favorite from the two days.
Band of Horses: I found a couple of their songs the day before and was excited to see them, and they did not disappoint at all. Make sure you check out this band.
Matt & Kim: Such a fun band to watch. They really brought a ton of energy to the stage and we instantly liked them. A female drummer and a guy on the keyboard, they come together to create catchy songs and do it with their own style.
Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band: One of my favorites. Folk inspired does not really get me too excited, but do not let that keep you away from Oberst. Rolling Stone named him the best song writer for a reason.
Anya Marina: Only caught a portion of her set, but I did hear a cover of T.I.'s "Whatever you like". Not a song you would expect from the soft singing blonde, but I really enjoyed it.
Cake: Although I enjoyed their music, there was a huge distraction because they were really angry with the sound guy for their stage. The negative vibe really took precedent over the actual music they were playing.
Nortec Collective: Not a band I was really excited to see before we walked up to the stage, but it was a great show. An accordian, trumpet, tuba, and two guys mixing sound on stage made up the collective, but the sum of it all was better than the parts sound. I could not help but dance when I was listening. If you download a song make sure you play it with the sound and bass cranked up so you can experience it all.
Modest Mouse: Have been a fan for a while, but I was a little disappointed they did not play some of the songs I love. I enjoy their music though, and it was still a good show.
Black Eyed Peas: Favorite performance of all. There is so much more they brought to the stage than other bands. Headlining Day 1 has its advantages for sure, and they took full advantage. Each of the four is such a great performer in their own way. Fergie sang one of her own songs, and Will.I.Am even brought out his DJ table for a while. They played literally until the sound stage turned off their mic's. Amazing.
Public Enemy: Great in the fact that I got to see Flava Flav. Never a big fan, but it was something special to see Flav take the stage.
Busta Rhymes: Came on stage late, but brought some good energy for the half hour he was there.
Of Montreal: So. Weird. I really cannot even remember what their music was like because it was so strange. There were people with gas masks and fat masked men on stage. I was looking forward to this band because of what I had heard beforehand, but I could just not get past it all.
The Faint: I was so excited when I saw them of the list of bands performing, and the show was better than I could have even hoped for. They played all my favorite songs, new and old. Great music and awesome energy. There is something great about watching their keyboard player get into that gave it a boost as well.
The Dead Weather: Jack White was running around the stage playing drums, singing and showing off his newest band. Only caught a portion of the set.
The Knux: Did not know what to expect from them, but this was also a pleasant surprise because it was another of my favorites. It was rap with a twist I have not heard yet. The Knux are actual brothers, and they mix some good guitar sound with hard lyrics and great beats. They brought a bunch of people from the audience up on stage with them for their last song too, which got everyone really pumped.

Like I said in my last post, I really enjoyed this experience. Street Scene is a definite to do for any San Diegan.

Street Scene from My Eyes Part 1

So this weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to go to Street Scene all thanks to the tickets provided by Slacker Radio (http://www.slacker.com/). They are a free, personal, and portable radio station customized for each user based on their favorite music allowing you to find new artists and listen to your favorites at the same time.

If you are a San Diego local and have yet to go to Street Scene, you need to experience it. Big bands and lesser known bands alike play for two days making it an amazing musical event. The streets of downtown are filled with avid fans and curious newbies, while the sounds of at least three bands fill your ears. There were 5 stages, each showcasing a new band frequently. There was never a dull moment because you are able to listen to what you want to, rather than in a typical concert you are stuck listening to whoever is on the stage for that time. In between the bands that you wanted to hear, you are able to explore the numerous vendors, beer gardens, and food stands. Eclectic jewelry, hippie clothes, shoes, sunglasses, and more line the streets in between the stages.

I was able to see about 10 bands each day, give or take. Some of them I knew, (like Black Eyed Peas), while others I heard for the first time.

I have to say, I was able to have a pretty complete experience at Street Scene. I learned about new bands and I got to see some of my favorites. Probably one of my favorite things to do when I was there though was people watch. What a variety of people at Street Scene! And as it got later... people got more drunk so the weirdness increased!

There is nothing better than having some of your favorite things combine to make the perfect day, or date, in this case. Dogs, the beach, and great food all work together to form another one of my Go-To Girl Designed Date Nights.

Ocean Beach itself is a spectacular place to visit. I feel like it has a little bit of a different personality than the other popular beaches in San Diego. It doesn't have the party scene like Pacific Beach or the upscale beauty of La Jolla, but it sure has character. Unique shops, such as The Black feature Rastafarian knick-knacks, candles and incense, clothes, posters and unique books. The streets are usually filled with locals or visitors from the hostel nearby. The beaches are nice as most San Diego beaches are. But the one that we are going to visit today is Dog Beach.

Dog Beach is one of my favorite places because it just so happens--dogs and the beach rate pretty high on my favorite things. This beach not only has the beauty of San Diego and the character of Ocean Beach, but also the sight of miles of dogs frolicking to and from the ocean with their owners. The reason I think Dog Beach would be a perfect place for a date, (whether you have a pooch of your own or not,) is because it is a such a great sight to see. Being a dog-lover, there is nothing better than watching so many dogs playing and enjoying the sun just like their owners. Families and their dogs roam the beach, playing ball and exploring the water. Dog Beach provides a comfortable setting and plenty of things to talk about. (see below for directions)

After you fill your dog quota, it is time for dinner. Get ready for the best burger of your life. Hodad's. I guarantee that there will be a line outside. Once you finally get inside, take your big yellow menus and seat yourself where you can. License plates fill up the walls and loud music is always on. The servers are to the point and when they are busy (which they usually are) don't expect any special treatment. Hodad's has the best and biggest burgers, amazing onion rings, and delicious vanilla shakes. I am not one to order a burger at a restaurant but Hodad's is simply amazing.

Dog Beach and Hodad's is perfect for a comfortable and casual date. Both places are unique and fun settings that you or your date will not be disappointed with.

8 West to the end. Turn left and follow the signs for Sunset Cliffs. Turn right at W Point Loma Blvd. and follow it as it curves around until you can turn right at the second stop sign into the beach parking lot

Tastes of College Area

With SDSU one week away from starting up again, I thought it would be appropriate to make a post about some of the students' favorite spots to eat.

1.) 4.0 Deli

Location: Corner of College and Montezuma

This is an amazing sandwich place. Usually crowded, inside you will find college students inside sharing pitchers of beers and munching on their favorite sandwich. The place is decorated with college apparel and shirts from organizations 4.0 has sponsored. They include two seasonal items-- strawberries and cream, and when strawberries are not in season, rice pudding. Both so delicious. Their strawberries are always fresh and tasty which is a perfect blend with the cream sauce which has a hint of cinnamon. The rice pudding is served with rum raisins is absolutely mouthwatering.

My favorite sandwich here is the Vegetarian Heaven on sourdough with no pesto. I am not a vegetarian and rarely order vegetarian meals but this sandwich has the perfect blend of veggies-- sprouts, avocado, onions, red peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese. Another favorite, if you are more the type of person who wants meat on their sandwich, is the Godfather--turkey, provolone cheese, pesto, and some veggies. They have great cheap drink specials and beer on tap, which makes it a favorite during happy hour for college students.

All in all, if you are in College Area and need a sub this is your place. I have never heard a complaint about anything ordered here, so you cant go wrong.

2.) Trujillo's

Location: Corner of College and Montezuma

Definitely an important part of your SDSU experience. Open until after 2am on weekends, Trujillo's becomes the favorite food of the drunk college kids who roam the streets. But when your drunk is not the only time Trujillo's is good. They have on of the best California burritos I have had and the Carne Asada fries are also delicious. The staff is friendly and the crowd is usually a great show! For $8, you can get a burrito and drink. A definite must if you enjoy Mexican food.

3.) Fattes Pizza

Location: El Cajon Blvd

So here comes another white sauce pizza recommendation. Fattes Pizza has amazing pizza crust, incredible toppings, and of course my favorite, great white sauce. They have great deals, such as two pizzas for the price of one. They deliver and their owner Travis is a chill, young guy that is great to work with if you want pizza for a lot of people for a meeting or student organization.

4.) Milo's

Location: Montezuma Rd

Milo's is also a pizza joint but I go here when I am craving a toasty salami sub. Cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and salami on a toasted sub makes for a great sandwich. They have a great pizza deal for a slice and a drink but I don't usually get the pizza there. This place became a fave of mine because I lived so close by. They are a great place to stop by for lunch and grab a bite. They only have two tables inside but they deliver and do pick up.

5.) Pita Pit

Location: College Ave

Typical college food, but can be a healthier choice. Basically limitless options of combinations of ingredients to make your perfect pita, Pita Pit offers a great break from usually unhealthy and greasy college food.

If You Are in the Mood For Raw Fish for a Great Price...

San Diego has billions of delicious sushi places but the reason this one stands out is its amazing happy hour. Rolls are half price Monday through Friday 3pm-7pm. If you are craving sushi but live on a college student budget like me, this place is absolutely perfect. From the outside, and well even on the inside, the place looks a little sketchy at first. However, I promise you will not be disappointed with their food for the price. This little restaurant offers a great service but is cash only during happy hour, (there is an ATM inside). Every time I go I get hot edamame beans and the Crunchy Roll. Nothing tops their Crunchy Roll. There is some kind of sauce on it that just makes it divine. This is a perfect spot for some good sushi on a cheap budget.

Hillcrest's Farmers Market

Today I decided to explore the Hillcrest's Farmers Market because as you know street fairs and farmers markets are some of my favorite things to do. Now this is what a farmers market looks like!!! Canopies full of food, things to buy, and fresh produce filled the streets. There were so many selections. I was starving as usual so I stopped at the La Creperie stand (they have an actual place in north park). For $8, I got a savory crepe with spinach, avocado, cheese, and a secret delicious sauce. So yummy! It was filling and the ingredients were bursting with flavor. The sauce is pretty garlicky but for a garlic-lover like me it was perfect! I'm usually a sweet crepe fan and go for just Nutella but I am so happy for this decision. The rest of the food there looked great but La Creperie gets my vote.

There is an extensive amount of fresh produce and flowers available. The rest of the stands that had things to buy had a wide variety of clothing, jewelry, and other little knick-knacks. I thought the stands were very interesting to look at and many of them lured me in to peruse around. The people here are friendly and are more than willing to help you out at their booth. There is a great mix of people in the crowd too, locals and exciting newbie looking to explore.

Parking can be a challenge, but look on the surrounding neighborhood streets and you are bound to find something. It is a great way to support locals and I definitely suggest bringing an eco-friendly bag to carry all of your goodies. I plan to make this a Sunday morning ritual because I am so pleased about my experience today.

OB Summerfest... More of a Picnic than "Fest"

So today I decided to venture into Ocean Beach for a "Summerfest" I had heard about. Being in love with street festivals, I was excited to see what OB had in store. On my exit off the 8 freeway, I looked over to my left and saw several canopies set up at the park. I thought to myself, "hmm, well I guess that is it. I'll check it out." Hoping for the best, I rolled into the parking lot and saw a row of maybe 15 canopies. Now I was apprehensive. Getting out of my car, I was immediately drawn to the 4 canopies set up with food. The first one was three kids yelling in attempts to sell snow cones, the second was Mexican food, then there were gyros, and lastly funnel cake. After a very sad and somewhat pathetic food display, I made my way to the "craft fair" part of the Summerfest. There I found a few more canopies filled with little trinkets and hand-made crafts for sale. Usually I am a sucker for things I don't need to buy but seem cool at the time, but this smorgasbord of little crafts and jewelry did not lure me to pull out my wallet.

The carnival part of the "fest" included very few rides and out of all things, 3 llamas, which surprisingly were probably the highlight of this event.

After I had explored the canopies and the llamas, entertainment had set up on the stage. I think it was country? I did actually not stay around long enough to hear it because overall I was really disappointed. Ocean Beach is one of my favorite beach towns but unfortunately I do not think they can put on a Summerfest just yet.

Fish & Cliffs: La Jolla Date Night

I am so excited to launch my new blog series-- Go-To Girl Designed Date Nights! Please give me feedback and let me know what you would like to see or what your perfect San Diego date is. I hope this helps you find new things to do in San Diego with that special someone so you can start creating your San Diego experience.

So for my first post, I wanted to do something that is one of my favorite things to do in San Diego. La Jolla is one of the most beautiful parts of SD. My sister lived here during her college years and we did quite a bit of exploring. Every nook and cranny of La Jolla is gorgeous. The coastline is remarkable and the streets are filled with upscale boutiques, restaurants, and hotels. There are coves to explore while snorkeling and endless miles of water to kayak on. The soundtrack of seals plays on repeat as you are walking along La Jolla Cove with the view of tourists and locals alike playing Frisbee and flying kites on the grass. A perfect place to spend a San Diego day.

There are 2 spots in particular I need to point out that in combination make the perfect date. The first stop in El Pescador Fish Market (open until 8pm). This little spot nestled on Pearl St. (Show map of 627 Pearl St, La Jolla, CA) offers the best and freshest fish and a variety of ways to eat it. Fresh fish to be cooked at home can be bought here and they also have an extensive, and delicious, menu. There is only a small parking lot in front of it so try parking on the next street over if needed. When you walk in, you are greeted by a wide display case of fresh fish and several wooden tables. If you go at a peak time like lunch, don't expect to get a table right away! The staff here is extremely friendly and laid back.

My personal favorite is the Lemon-Butter Swordfish sandwich. It is served on sourdough with lettuce, tomato, green onion, and if your request it, avocado. This sandwich full of fresh and natural ingredients to make the perfect combo of yumminess. You get a large portion of fresh fish on your sandwich which will leave you more than satisfied. My dad always gets the catch of the day and has yet to be disappointed. If you like fish, I promise you will be in heaven at El Pescador Fish Market.

Your next stop is this secluded spot where you can see all of La Jolla's coastline and if you are lucky, a few hang-gliders. A perfect spot for a romantic sunset. After you climb under the gate, you will led to a dirt path that will originally look less than spectacular. But I promise if you keep going you will not be disappointed. Soon you will see the ocean and have your breath taken away. This is my favorite view of the ocean. There are some benches made of tree stumps to sit on, but bring a blanket if you want to cuddle :) Usually there are not very many people so you can enjoy your thoroughly enjoy your date and take in all the beauty. Feel free to explore the area around there because there are many little trails and wildlife.

With the combination of El Pescador Fish Market and the amazing cliffs, I promise you and your date will have unforgettable experience.

Head east Pearl St. toward Draper Ave. Turn left at Girard Ave. Turn right on Torrey Pines. Turn left to stay on Torrey Pines. Turn left on La Jolla Shores Dr. Right on La Jolla Farms Rd. Park in the residential area but be aware of street signs to make sure you can park there legally. It is the first turn in on your left. You will see a dirt path and a gate.

Eating In San Diego Style

I realize that in my blog so far I have explored restaurants and things to do. Now every so often I will throw in something new, but along the same lines of my favorite things. This next post is not about a new place to eat out but rather something to help you make the most of San Diego while eating in!

Sam the Cooking Guy. A local San Diegan who makes cooking easy, enjoyable, and something anyone can do no matter their skill level. His recipes vary and you can find something no matter what mood you are in. Sam prides himself on his lack of “chef-speak” and his ability to reach out to many people due to the simplicity, (but tastiness) of most of his recipes.

A personal favorite of mine is the White Pizza with Spinach & Garlic (I know, white pizza again, can you tell I kinda have a thing for it??) My boyfriend made this for me the first time over a year ago and it is now a frequent meal in my life. Delicious and simple. Something every college student looks for in their meals.

Another recipe that proved success was the Spicy Beef and Asparagus Stir Fry. Being a huge asparagus fan, this was not difficult to like for me. The stir fry tasted fresh and the textures of the veggies and meat meshed very well together.

So when staying in fits your mood, try one of Sam’s recipes and you will not be disappointed.

Making the Most of Being a San Diego Resident

You mean there are more perks than just living in San Diego? Yep, you even get free admission to cool places. Every Tuesday Balboa park offers free admission to a variety of their museums. Each Tuesday the museums rotate. Today, the following museums were eligible for free admission: San Diego Art Institute, Mingei International Museum, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Museum of Man, and the Japanese Friendship Garden. Because I was just at SDMA, I decided to go into the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI), the Museum of Man, and the Mingei Museum.

The SDAI is also known as the Museum of the Living Artist because it showcases works from local artists. The collections rotate about every 4-6 weeks. I previously did not know San Diego had a museum to showcase emerging local artists. The pieces of work were not only phenomenal, but also diverse. There are many different mediums on display and different styles of art. My favorite being Neil Greenstein's pieces done with wood bas-relief or bronze sculpting. I thought his work was so full of life. He captured intimate and personal snapshots of things that are simple, but the most important things we experience as human beings; for example, a dad teaching his child to ride a bike, holding hands, or two lovers embracing. The SDAI provides a little insight to what people around us in San Diego are creating and I believe it is so wonder

ful to get to see that.

The Museum of Man has always been one of my favorite museums in Balboa Park because I love being able to see snippets of people's life that existed thousands or even millions of years ago. Like most of the museums in Balboa Park, the bottom floor rotates it exhibits and the top floor remains basically the same. The ground floor explored Latin America as well as South America. Although these were interesting, the permanent exhibits are what really intrigue me. The "Footsteps Through Time" exhibit explores 4 million years of human evolution. The exhibit is complete with statues, hand-on pieces, and great visuals. I find it incredible the information they can gain from a piece of a lower jaw! And to believe our species has come this far amazes me. To look back on what they believe to be our ancestors is simply mind-blowing. They even go into what the future might hold for human beings. Such an exciting exhibit!

showcases cultures from all over the world. The current collections are "Indi

a Adorned," "Masters of Mid-Century California Modernism," and "Sonabai." My favorite collection was the California Modernism. They displayed bright colored decorative art made by Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman. The picture on the left is an example of one of my favorite pieces (California Poppies, Designed for Era Industries, Los Angeles, produced in Kashmir, India, 1970)

So for a day of free activities, I would say it was pretty amazing. It is all about taking advantage of what San Diego has to offer and creating your own experience. What did you do to today to make the most of San Diego?

A Little Slice of New York in San Diego

I think by now my passion for eating and dining out is quite clear. So I think it is time to give you a little insight into the food I crave on a regular basis.

First up, Bronx Pizza (Show map of 111 Washington St, San Diego, CA 92103). Now I have to start by saying I am not a huge pizza fan. For some reason, it never really settled well with me, nothing spectacular. I know it may sound weird, but it is true. So why do I crave Bronx Pizza you ask? Once you try it, you will to. Their Whitestone pizza is so yummy it is near impossible to not crave it. The thin crust pizza right out of the oven made with mozzarella, ricotta, garlic and parmesan, makes the Whitestone is near perfection. You can order by the slice (only $2.50!) or a whole pie. The menu includes many toppings and different speciality pizzas, so the combinations are basically limitless.

But that is not all that is great about Bronx Pizza. The little restaurant located in Hillcrest is like stepping into a pizza place in New York, (the men that work behind the counter even greet you with "New York attitudes"). The place is covered with New York decor like maps, pictures of famous New Yorkers, and their is even a room dedicated to the Yankees.

My dad is originally from the Bronx and that is actually how I found this place. Trying to make his Father's Day special I wanted to find a place he would love. When I stumbled upon an authentic New York, hole-in-the-wall pizza place with great reviews, I knew we had to try. The whole family was so pleased and my dad still talks about this place! The pages of great reviews do not lie!

So when you are wanting a slice of pizza, don't just settle, try a piece of authentic New York pizza from Bronx pizza.

2 New Ways to Enjoy Water in San Diego

My boyfriend's birthday was this week so we put Saturday aside to celebrate. Well being the planner I am, I had to make a full day and take advantage of some San Diego's activities. Now, we both have been living in San Diego for over 3 years now and really never have seen the Birch Aquarium. Because we are complete Discovery channel nerds, (Shark Week anyone?) I thought it would be perfect.

The Birch Aquarium is nestled in the breathtaking views of the coastline of La Jolla and the Scripps Pier. Only being $9 to get in for students, the Aquarium makes for a cheap and interesting way to spend the day. It summer and it was Saturday, which apparently means family day at the aquarium because it was crowded. Other than a little bit of lag going from tank to tank, it really was not that much of a burden. In order to avoid the crowd, we didn't do the typical start of The Hall of Fishes, but rather the "Feeling the Heat" exhibit. This explored the fate of our planet due to climate change and the irreversible effects of CO2 emissions. Although this is a current topic and it has now been ingrained into our brains, I felt the Birch Aquarium did a wonderful job on displaying the facts in a visually appealing and interesting way. Lots of hand on activities and videos to watch. There is also an educational section for smaller children to participate in activities. Next we headed to the Tidepools and surprisingly the view was what caught most of our interest (no offense to the tidepools, but the La Jolla coast is magnificent). The tidepools look out to Scripps Pier and the surrounding La Jolla coast. You can see beautiful sights of San Diego. After taking in our fair share of the views, we journeyed over to the Shark exhibit. I would have to say this was the low point of my day. The exhibit was small, and placed outside in the back corner of the aquarium. I expected to see something like Sea World's Shark Tunnel, but instead was greeted by a somewhat small sized tank filled with smaller sharks. It may be my expectations mixed with a little excitement from Shark Week that let me down, however, I do feel their Shark exhibit was a little less than satisfactory.

Moving inside, we finished up with the Hall of Fishes. Amazing. The Birch Aquarium Hall of Fishes has so much to see and so many things to learn about. The dark maze of fish tanks are organized by region. Each tank explores a different part of the regions. The fish are incredible. I have been to aquariums but it still amazes me to see some of the underwater creatures. Overall, I would say the Birch Aquarium is a great trip to take in San Diego. We spent about 2-3 hours there and it was time to see all that it had to offer. If you time it right, you can see feedings or there are activities for kids.

The second part of the day was spent on one of Hornblower Cruises' fabulous boats. We went on the Sights & Sips Sunset Cruise, which is new to Hornblower. We had never done a cruise around the bay and let me tell you it was a great way to see San Diego from a new view. The cruise is about 2 hours and it takes you around the bay to see sights such as Seaport Village, Downtown, Coronado Bridge, and many more. I was a little apprehensive to take a cruise in fear it might turn into a tourist sight seeing tour, but this cruise was nothing of the sort. Seeing San Diego from the water is unmatchable. The Sights & Sips Cruise changes its theme and menu every month or so and this month had a Hawaiian theme. Basically all that means is the food and hors d'oeuvres being tray passed are Hawaiian based. They also offer drink specials in conjunction with the theme. For $30 a person, I would have hoped to get my hands on a few more hors d'oeuvres, but overall it was a fantastic experience. We sat at the top of the boat and could see everything perfect. Although it was just a bit cloudy, the sunset was beautiful. This is definitely a great thing to bring a loved one or a group of intimate friends to.

A Dessert Fiend's Dream

Before I write any new posts, I have to make a shout out to one of my ultimate favorite places in San Diego. Extraordinary Desserts. A place where a dessert lover goes and can never be satisfied anywhere else. There are actually two locations in San Diego--both are very different, but equally delicious. The quaint coffee house-like location is in Banker's Hill, while the large, industrial location finds it home in Little Italy.

I was first introduced to the Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy. When I walked through the giant door into what looks to be a decorated warehouse straight into a display case of decadent desserts, I knew my experience there was going to be a good one. Usually busy, you have to push through the crowd of eager people to make it to the hostess. Once you finally do make it there, expect a wait. But when “about 45 minutes to an hour” escapes the hostess’ mouth do not be disheartened, because what you are about to experience is definitely worth the wait. Spend this time carefully examining each piece of heavenly goodness in the display case so you can make the best decision.

Now before I go on, I need to admit my bias. Although the atmosphere and the beautifully decorated desserts caught my eye, I have to say it was the Warm Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding that stole my heart and created my addiction. I am sure Extraordinary Desserts has so many other amazing things to eat, but I will always be a loyal fan of the bread pudding. I do have to say, sometimes they like to mix it up and offer a Blackberry Croissant Bread Pudding or even a Lemon Meringue Croissant Bread Pudding, which are both delicious, but nothing can top my favorite. Warning: they do run out of the bread pudding early in the night—do not come here at 9:45pm expecting to try it. So in these instances (had to suffer a couple times before learning my lesson to come earlier) I have tried several other desserts. All delicious, all filling, all gorgeous. But they are no Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding. This location is perfect to celebrate your best friend’s birthday, have a girl night, or go out with a group of friends. Keep in mind that it is a little of the expensive side—expect around $10 a dessert.

The other location (Banker’s Hill) is much smaller but offers the same desserts and a more intimate setting. You have to wait in line to make it in the door to even see the display case of desserts. And on busy nights, there is even a bouncer (yes, a bouncer at a dessert place!) But I would say this spot would be perfect for a date.

Oh and I almost forgot… the white hot chocolate! Extraordinary Desserts is famous for their wide variety of tasty teas. They also have coffee and hot chocolate. Me, being a huge fan of white chocolate, (in case you haven’t noticed all ready,) had to try it. The creamy, rich white hot chocolate with a touch of lemon definitely hits the spot and makes it top of my list of scrumptious cups of cocoa.

My sister recently visited beautiful San Diego and being the good hostess I am, I had a full itinerary planned. One of the days we ventured to the gorgeous Balboa Park. If you live in San Diego and have not taken advantage of this miraculous place, you have to be crazy. Balboa Park has so much to offer--museums, wonderful gardens, plays, events, history, and the list goes on. You could spend a day just walking around the beautiful park.

We decided to venture into the San Diego Museum of Art (http://www.sdmart.org/) because they were doing a exhibit on portraits that I really wanted to see. What a diverse and interesting museum, especially for the price ($12 for adults and $8 for students)! The magnificent architecture is a perfect home for the incredible art that lives inside of it. Although all collections seen at this museum are breath-taking, I want to focus on the two that stood out the most to me.

First, my sister and I explored the collection of Calder jewelry. Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is a fabulous American sculptor who created unique, and not necessarily practical, pieces of work. The museum offers a glimpse at Calder's incredible, but lesser-known works of art. Most of the jewelry seen in this collection was made from household items or material easily found such as brass, steel, or shards of glass, and were given to family, friends, and especially his wife. His bohemian and whimsical shapes, often inspired by nature, are also shown in photographs around the exhibit on famous people such as Angelica Huston.

The second collection that deserves mention is Richard Avedon's "Portraits of

Power." Being a fan of photography in general, this collection is what lured me into the Museum of Art. Avedon (1923-2004) used his photography career to create controversial portraits of political figures as well as leaders in media, industry, military and corporate America. What is brilliant about Avedon's minimalist portraits is the ability to capture each subjects' personality through poses and expressions. This collection brings to life what was once a intense time in politics.

Places to Calm Your Empty Morning Stomach

I always wake up hungry. And when I am hungry, I am cranky. Nothing can cure my crankiness better than a great breakfast place. So here for you, I have notable breakfast places to calm the crankiness (no particular order).

1. Kono's Cafe

Location: Pacific Beach (Show map of 704 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109)

What I Ordered: Big Breakfast #1 (consists of eggs, bacon, english muffins, potatoes, and pancakes) and a Hot White Chocolate from the coffee stand right by

Ok, this place is wonderful for so many reasons. Not only are their breakfasts delicious and cheap but also you get to eat while looking out at the ocean. Perfect combo in my opinion. There are several decks you can choose to sit, but for the best view, go right past the shop with the hammocks and you will find your breakfast oasis. The one downfall is Kono's is a local favorite, so do plan in standing in line when you get there, (but it is worth the wait)! And sometimes parking can be a problem in PB. The Big Breakfasts are huge-- it is a over-piled plate of food! You could easily spilt it (their is an extra charge for an extra plate but only 75 cents). The pancakes are fluffy and very tasty. I love hot white chocolate and I have to say Kono's Coffee Stand has one of the best! It is perfect to drink while standing in line :) Oh and just as a heads up... its cash only.

So all in all, the food, view, and atmosphere make for a perfect start to a San Diego day.

2. Hob Nob Hill

What I Ordered: Cream of Wheat (with brown sugar, raisins, and pecans), Eggs Benedict, Pancakes, and Orange Juice (I shared this feast with my sister and we were full all day!)

A popular spot for Banker's Hill locals, but also made famous by Guy from the Food

Network. I actually visited this place not knowing any of this but rather just needed a place to eat quickly because I was starving! This restaurant has been around since 1944 and has the decor to prove it. The waitresses all wear typical old diner dresses and the restaurant is filled with dark wood and giant chandeliers. The first time I went was a little disappointing due to my extremely empty stomach and the extremely long wait. I got pancakes and orange juice and was pleased with both, but my frustration with the wait (I already mentioned I get cranky when hungry) exceeded most of my pleasant thoughts about this place. However, one thing I did notice was you could put in reservations.

So why did I go back? Well fate, really. My sister was in town visiting and we had plans to go to Cafe 222 (see below) but we were starving (seems to be a pattern...) and wanted something quicker so I decided to call and see if I could make reservations at Hob Nob Hill. Well it worked out just perfect. We got there, found a great parking spot, walked in and were seated in 5 minutes. Still being very hungry, we ordered the feast I listed above. I was extremely impressed this time around. The smorgasbord of food gave us quite the taster of the local long time favorite. Being initially scared about ordering the cream of wheat, I have to say it is the best cream of wheat I have ever had. The goodies they give you with it to add in--raisins, pecans, brown sugar, and milk--make for a little bowl of heaven to start off your day. Although this was very filling, I continued to eat the Eggs Benedict I ordered, which came with grilled tomatoes. Although I was a bit skeptical of grilled tomatoes for breakfast, I was pleasantly surprised by their tastiness. The Eggs Benedict was also delicious with a hint of refreshing lemon in their benedict sauce. Both dishes made me feel at home.

After giving them a second try, I can assure I will go back at Hob Nob Hill and stop in regularly for their delectable bowl of cream of wheat.

3. Waffle Spot

Location: Hotel Circle (Show map of 1333 Hotel Cir S, San Diego, CA 92108)

What I Ordered: Double Cup Waffle

Who would have ever thought the greatest waffles would be found in Hotel Circle at an outdated hotel? I for one was not a believer when I walked into this small diner-like restaurant. With cartoon breakfast characters adorning the walls, I still remained skeptical. However, the fluffy, large, tasty waffle quickly changed my mind. The waffle I ordered was made with chocolate chips and white chocolate chips--just the right amount. The chocolate did not overwhelm the delicious waffle batter that this Spot seemed to have perfected over the years. Not many locals seem to know about this hidden treasure because the tables are lined with out of place tourists. But if it is a waffle mood that you are in, than there is no better place than the Waffle Spot.

4. Cafe 222

Location: Downtown (Show map of 222 Island Ave, San Diego, CA 92101)

What I Ordered: Pumpkin Waffles

Now this place take waffle to a new and exciting level. If you are looking for something different, lets say like a pumpkin waffle or peanut butter banana stuffer french toast, Cafe 222 is where to go. This quaint little eclectic breakfast spot is filled with bright colors and unique artwork--down to chandeliers made of coffee cups and silverware and salt and pepper shakers marked with 2s. There is outdoor and indoor seating, but when inside you get a peak into the inner workings of Cafe 222 watching the staff hustle and bustle or prepare their delicious granola. I happened to go when the place was not busy at all and we had no wait. However, when I tried on a Sunday, there was about an hour wait, so be careful when you chose to go--I would say weekdays may be your best bet.

Excited to try something new, I ordered the Pumpkin Waffles while my boyfriend got the Peanut butter ones. I have to say I was more impressed by his dish. Although the Pumpkin Waffles were tasty, they were not exactly what I was hoping for... maybe it was the spice. The Peanut Butter Waffles (which are topped with bananas) were extremely delicious. A filling waffle but every bite explodes with the warm taste of peanut butter.

A Leap Into the Blogsphere

So here I go... into the wonderful world of blogging. A world with unlimited possibilities. A world where I can share with you my adventures of life in San Diego. What a wonderful city--a city full of life! Just like you I love to eat, drink, and be merry and what better a place to do that than San Diego! I look forward to sharing my journeys with you and along the way getting to know you and your San Diego experiences, so please feel free to comment to share your story. Whether it is a new restaurant I try, a new place I visit, or a funny encounter I had, I will post as frequently as possible.
